Cherry School’s 45% enrollment increase in 4 years

has St. Louis County School Board considering expansion tonight

When citizens in the St. Louis County School District (ISD 2142) voted in December 2009 to approve a district realignment, the main reasons were to address declining enrollment, modernize school facilities and expand opportunities for students.

One outcome of that realignment is that Cherry School has seen a 45 percent enrollment increase in the four years since that vote. While Cherry’s enrollment was 312 students during the 2009-2010 school year, this year there are 453 students.

The number of families choosing to enroll their children in Cherry School has been so dramatic that, when it meets at 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9, at North Woods School in Cook, the school board will consider adding eight classrooms onto Cherry School.

“Five years ago, the school board questioned whether our district could survive in the future because of declining enrollment,” said Board Chair Bob Larson. “Today, the result of our facilities plan and more classroom choices is that enrollment is exceeding projections, and our new challenge is to provide adequate facilities for every family that is choosing St. Louis County Schools.”

Supt. Knife Chief gets $4 million in tax relief for ISD 2142 taxpayers

ECFE programs get 4-Star rating

The regular meeting of the ISD 2142 board held Monday at 5 p.m. in the South Ridge School was a good one for district taxpayers.
Supt. Teresa Knife Chief reported that the Legislature had given $38 million in taconite money to northeastern Minnesota schools. She added that she was at a meeting of school superintendents and was able to get $4 million of that money for ISD 2142. The money has to be used to pay down the bonds that were sold to finance the building program. This will result in lower taxes for district taxpayers.
